Dancing with the Stars

I sketched in the ballroom stage. I painted the top bar where the ball hangs from - blue and purple blended into it. The half square on the stage was blue with a lighter blue blended into it. The background was blackish blue. The ball was purple. The floor was a lighter blue, blue, and some purple blended into it. I painted it twice to make it brighter. I drew and blocked in the dancer in white. Paula showed me how to make shine on the floor and the purple ball. She said to put stars in the background. The stars are shades of: blues, pink, purple, and white. She showed me how to paint lines in the floor for reflection from the stage lights. She said put rings around the lights. I painted the bars that spread out like a fan light blue at the top to dark blue at the bottom. I painted the dancer's skin a peachy flesh color by mixing orange, yellow, and white together. I painted the dancer's clothes and socks a light purple color. I painted white and light blue lines for highlights on the half square shaped support on the stage. I painted dark purple lines for shades on the half square shaped support. I painted white rings around the lights closest to the purple ball. Then I put hot pink rings around all the lights at the top. I put hot pink, light blue, blue, white, light purple, and purple stars in the dark background. I put two hot pink stage lights and two squiggly lines for reflection. I painted the dancer's hair a dark brown by mixing yellow and dark purple. I painted white L shaped highlights on the fan shaped bars. I painted some shades on the dancer's skin by mixing white, orange, yellow, and a little bit of brown. The shades on the dancer's clothes are dark purple. I repainted the dancer's outfit a darker purple. I painted a little white on the dancer's neck, then painted it a dark flesh color. I painted squiggly lines, then painted white for reflection. I painted the dancer's reflection white, then painted it a darker purple. I painted the reflection on the light bar at the top of the stage hot pink with purple blended into it. This painting is called Dancing with the Stars. I finished this painting on January 8, 2012. I love how the bright colors glow against the dark background.

Checkerboard Dams

36"x23.5"
I sketched Glen Canyon Dam, with Hoover Dam behind it. I drew curved lines up and down and across to show its concrete. I drew intake towers on Hoover Dam. I started painting the right side of the dam purple and yellow. I painted in squares that are checkerboard yellow and purple. The checkerboard pattern is the concrete dam's face. I finished painting purple and yellow squares in a checkerboard pattern. Then I started painting in squares that are  checkerboard pattern green and red. The red and green is in the middle section of the dam. I did all the squares from top to bottom. It took awhile to paint because I had to paint the squares carefully. In between the bridge, the squares were hard to paint. Next I painted all the squares orange and blue the same way I did with the green and red on the left side of the dam, above the bridge. I painted all the squares carefully. I painted the left side of the dam blue and orange. Half of the squares were red orange at the top, orange on the top half, yellow orange on the bottom half, and light orange at the bottom. The other squares were purple blue at the top, blue at the top half section, light blue at the bottom half section, and lighter blue at the bottom. The middle of the dam is made of red and green squares. Half of the squares are: Dark red at the top, red at the top half, red orange at the bottom half, and light red at the bottom. The other squares are: Dark green at the top, green at the top half section, yellow green at the bottom half section, and light green at the bottom. Then I painted the right side of the dam. The squares are purple. Dark purple at the top, blue purple at the top half section, purple at the bottom half section, and light purple at the bottom. I painted the yellow squares from orange yellow with a little bit of purple in it at the top to white yellow at the bottom. I started on the left side of Hoover Dam. The squares are yellow and purple. They're the same pattern as Glen Canyon's. I painted the lookout supports red and green. Dark at the bottom and light at the top. I painted the left side of Hoover Dam twice with purple and yellow. It goes dark at the bottom to light at the top. The colors are: dark purple, light purple, and lighter purple. Also dark orange yellow, yellow, and lighter yellow. The middle section: Dark green, green, and light green. Also: Dark red, red orange, and pink. Right side of the dam: Red orange, orange, and yellow orange. Also: Dark blue, blue, and light blue. On the left hand corner the sky is light blue. The right hand corner the sky is dark blue. The bridge and the dams crests (tops) are black. I painted the lookout supports on the left side of the dam dark purple and yellow. The yellow has yellow orange with a little purple and red in it. All the skinny sides are dark yellow. The fronts are dark purple. I repainted them purple three times. The middle of the dam, the supports are dark red and green. The fronts are dark red. The right side of the dam the supports are dark red and orange and dark blue. The skinny sides are dark blue. The fronts are dark red orange. On Glen Canyon Dam, the two skinny triangle structures are dark red and green. The two flag like supports, the right support are dark red orange and blue and light blue on the square top. The left support are dark yellow and purple and light yellow at the square top. I started painting the two intake towers different shades of orange: red orange, orange, and light orange. I finished painting the intake towers shades of orange. I repainted one of the flag shaped supports on Glen Canyon Dam is light purple. One side of the two structures on either side of Glen Canyon are light green. There are four big support structures things on Hoover Dam.  Half are orange and blue and the right half are purple. I repainted the night sky dark and the day sky a light blue to make it brighter. I painted the bridge with white stripes. I did the same thing with the dams top. I started repainting the purple squares to make them intense on Glen Canyon Dam. I repainted all the purple squares from dark purple, blue purple, purple, and light purple at the bottom. Then I repainted all the orange squares from dark to light: Red orange, orange, yellow orange. and white orange at the bottom of Glen Canyon Dam. Then I repainted all the green squares from: Dark green, green, yellow green, and light green at the bottom. I repainted the red squares from: dark red, red, red orange, and pink at the bottom. I painted the white stripes on the bridge and the two dam crests (tops) straighter. I painted the moon and stars on the top right hand corner. I painted the sun white first, then painted it yellow orange. The sun is on the top left hand corner. All the squares took a long time because I had to paint them carefully. This painting is called Checkerboard Dams. This painting was finished on January 2, 2012.  This Checkerboard Dams painting is psychedelic.

Moon Okapi

18"x24"
I sketched in a okapi - an animal that has a head like a giraffe, a body like a horse, and stripes on its rump like a zebra. I painted the background a dark pretty blue to cover up the white spots. I painted the animal hot pink red color. It took awhile because I had to paint the stripes on his rump pink. I had to paint around his stripes on his front legs and also on his face. I repainted his stripes and body to make it more intense. I drew a crescent moon on his rump. It reminds me of the moon behind some clouds. We drew antlers on his head. I painted dark blue antlers on the whole background around the animal. I highlighted all the right sides and top of the antler a lighter blue where the sun is hitting it. I painted the right side of the crescent moon orange twice and I also painted the left side of the moon a dark pretty green. I painted the moon twice to make it brighter. The hardest part was to paint in between the stripes. Then I painted the stripes on his back, front legs, parts of his body and face - lime green. I painted all the stripes green again to make them brighter. It is hard to paint the stripes because they're narrow. I painted the animal's antlers white twice to make them stand out. I also painted the feet white to balance it out with the antlers. I painted the eyes and the bottom lip orange. The shades on the okapi's body, parts of the face, and legs are a dark purple by mixing red and blue  together. I shaded the green stripes on his legs and his face a dark green. I then shaded all the left side of his antlers and feet a light blue for the dark side. I painted light purple highlights on his back, right side of his head, legs, and down his chest. Then I put highlights in the green stripes of his legs, face, and ears. The highlights are yellow green and are on all right side where the light is shining. The tail is blue on the left side for shades and white on the right side for highlights. We outlined the eyes with dark green and also did the same on his nose. This painting was finished on November 20, 2011. This painting is called the Moon Okapi. It is bright because it contrasts with the dark background.

Floating leaves on the water

18"x24"
I sketched leaves floating on water. I painted the background dark blue, black, and a lighter blue for the water ripples and reflection from the water. I painted the biggest leaf on the center left red orange, green with orange stripes blended into the veins. The two leaves at the top are yellow orange with green blended into them on the edge and in the middle. The one on the left of the big leaf is yellow with green blended into it. The leaf closet to the big leaf on the right hand bottom corner is green. Next to the  green leaf is a leaf that is orange yellow. I painted bright blue lines in the black area around the leaves to show that it's water. I did the same with blue and black mixed together and drew lines around the leaves on light blue areas to show it's water reflecting. I painted yellow orange lines on the leaves for their veins. One leaf vein is pure orange. I painted yellow water droplets on the leaves twice for it to be bright. I repainted the right side of the leaf yellow and blended in orange bands following the veins. I painted the veins orange yellow and the water droplets yellow. I painted  red orange circles around all the water droplets and the yellow leaves. On the big leaf, the top left section of the leaf are circles of water droplets that are dark red. On all the water droplets the top of the droplets are a thin line and the bottom line is thick. I outlined the underside and the right side of all the leaf veins a dark red for shades. Shadows are areas that the sun does not shine on. The top and left sides of the leaves had no dark red because that's where the sun is shining on them. It took 4 sessions to complete this painting. I completed this painting on October 30,2011. This painting is loud and bright. It sticks out because the dark background contrasts against the bright colors leaves.

German Castle

First I sketched the castle from a photo. I also drew in the hills and sky. I drew in all the fancy decorations and windows. I painted the sky dark purple at the top. In the middle section the sky is dark blue with some dark purple blended into it from the top. I painted light purple at the bottom of the sky, then blended it with the dark blue above. I painted dark blue around the castle. I painted a pretty lighter blue throughout the sky. I painted a little bit of that pretty blue on the right side of the painting below the sky. I painted the hills below the sky dark blue twice to make it stand out. Then I painted and repainted the hills underneath the dark blue hills and dark greyish blue. I painted the hills underneath the dark greyish blue turquoise. I painted the cliffs that the castle sits on shades of turquoise: dark blue, dark greyish blue, and white for light turquoise. I blotched dark blues in all areas under the castle. I blotched blue for the medium, light blues for  light like what I did for dark blue blend it in between. I started painting the castle on the left side where the light is hitting it light orange. Then I started painting the right side of the castle a rusty orange for shades. The in between dark and light will be pure orange. I painted half of the castle's roof tops a different shades of rusty red like light, medium, and dark. The red, orange, dark brown, and white are mixed in for the shade rusty red. I finished more of the castle colors; like yellow orange for light orange, orange for medium, orange brown for dark, and dark brown for the darkest. I basically finished blocking in the castle. I painted the area underneath the castle rusty red. I painted a light purple line on the very bottom horizon where it meets with the lighter blue. I painted a little section of the sky a lighter blue. Then I painted all the castle windows a dark blueish purple. I repainted the dark shapes of the castle, but that took a while because of all the details. I repainted the lightest shades too but, again took awhile because all of the details. I painted dark blue on the left bottom-central edge of the castle, then squiggle lighter blue along the dark blue, with my stroke slanted down and fill in the stripes to look like a cliff. I painted an orange moon and white, blue, purple, and orange stars scattered across the sky. This painting took 7 sessions to finish. It was finished on October 23,2011. The castle looks good for Halloween because of the its glowing orange against the dark sky, along with a full orange moon. It looks like a Disney castle. This painting is called The German Castle.
